The Indian Council of Historical Research Doctoral Fellowships is granted normally to apparent foreign historians who disclose keen interest in doing further research. ICHR, established in 1972, is an independent organization under the Indian Societies Registration Act, 1860.

The Indian Council of Historical Research Doctoral Fellowships / Scholarships are awarded for a period of one year and it can be extended for one more year in exceptional cases. It is granted to post graduates and research scholars.The ICHR goal is

• To bring together all historians and give them a platform for interacting
• To provide an all India basis direction to the way history is written i.e. to make the writing of history scientific and rational
• To propagate, encourage and organize research activities in history with thrust on areas which have remained unattended so far
• To boost and coordinate research activities in history in order to bring about a balance among the various areas of historical research.

Indian Council of Historical Research Doctoral Fellowships for Foreign Nationals is meant for those who have not been excluded from being granted scholarships under the other scholarship schemes.

The scholarship is awarded for only a year. It can't be normally extended beyond this period.

Application Process

The notification for ICHR Doctoral Fellowship for Foreign Nationals is published in leading newspapers. The candidates are asked to send typed application to the Indian Council of Historical Research. Applications should be routed through the university, college or institute where the applicant is employed. The application should be accompanied by the following documents:

• 5 copies of exhaustive note on the research plan
• Curriculum Vitae of the applicant
